Ultrasonic hatch-cover testing is a practical alternative to hose testing for locating leakage paths and evaluating the weathertight integrity of cargo-hold hatch covers. The method is dry, repeatable and can be particularly useful when water testing is undesirable or impractical.
What the Test Can Identify
- Areas of insufficient gasket compression;
- Damaged or deteriorated sealing rubber;
- Misalignment or local leakage at cross-joints and corners;
- Leakage around compression bars, drains and related sealing arrangements;
- Areas requiring adjustment or repair;
- Effectiveness of completed hatch-cover repairs.
Equipment and Reporting
Testing is carried out using calibrated ultrasonic equipment. Results are documented by hatch and test location, together with observations and recommendations where applicable.
Classification Society Use
IACS UR Z17 contains requirements for service suppliers performing certain services on behalf of Classification Societies, including ultrasonic tightness testing where applicable. When a test is required for formal Class or statutory purposes, the specific Classification Society’s approval and attendance requirements should be confirmed before testing. For operational, owner, charterer or P&I purposes, ultrasonic testing can also be used to identify leakage areas and verify repairs before departure.
